Volunteering at Defy was an eye-opening experience that changed my perspective on life. Defy is a program that helps US prisoners learn essential job skills and start their entrepreneurial journeys. As a volunteer, I got to witness firsthand the incredible transformations taking place within the prison walls.
When I started volunteering, I was a bit nervous, not knowing what to expect. But as I interacted with the participants, I realised they were eager to improve their lives and such programs gave them a sense of hope and purpose that they wouldn’t otherwise have a chance to experience. They weren’t defined by their past mistakes; they were working hard to build a brighter future.
However, volunteering made me deeply aware of my own privilege. Only some get the same opportunities in life. It was humbling to offer support and build meaningful connections with these participants.
What struck me most was the power of second chances. Defy empowers these individuals through entrepreneurship, teaching them to develop business ideas and gain self-reliance. They also provide employment readiness training, preparing them for life outside of prison.
My experience at Defy has shifted my perspective on the criminal justice system. It’s a reminder that with the right support, people can change and contribute positively to society.
In the end, volunteering at Defy has been a journey of personal transformation. It’s not just about giving back; it’s about understanding the incredible potential for change that exists within every person, regardless of their past. It’s about believing in second chances and the power of rehabilitation and reintegration.
