An Engineer’s Dream: Childhood Aspirations that Led Me to Who I Am Now

Growing up surrounded by cousins who made engineering the most interesting job to have and ever since, it was the only job I had my eyes on. I didn’t even think about becoming an astronaut or dream of becoming a superhero – Engineering was my path.

Thankfully, my family was also there to help and guide me. They were hard-working, and resilient, teaching me what true leadership was like. From then on, I decided to pursue engineering in India while skillfully polishing my leadership qualities.

Leadership?

It’s not just a title for me; it’s a passion sparked by my folks.

See, leadership isn’t what it used to be.

Back then, it was all about rallying the troops for a common goal.

But now?

It’s more like coaching individuals to be their best, It is leading from the behind. Real leadership help people succeed, even when life is tough.

I heard this great analogy from a mentor recently, he mentioned that, “a leader is like an orchestra conductor, they may not even know how to play every instrument on the orchestra, but they know how to enable every musician and lead them to delivery their best”.

This made me think and I started drawing parallels, I realized that leaders share several similarities with conductors,

  • Just as a conductor unifies musicians and shapes the ensemble’s sound, leaders unite their team members and influence the collective output. Setting the tempo as a conductor mirrors a leader’s ability to set the pace and direction for their team or organization. Executing clear preparations and cues aligns with a leader’s need to provide clear guidance and instructions.
  • The non-verbal communication during a performance relates to the unspoken aspects of leadership, such as body language and actions, while rehearsal interruptions are akin to feedback and coaching sessions where leaders provide direction and feedback to their team members.
  • In essence, both conductors and leaders are tasked with orchestrating a harmonious and effective performance.

It’s about being there for others, giving them a hand when they need it, and helping them overcome challenges. It’s not about being too controlling or bossy. Good leaders let you spread your wings.

So, why am I here?

Thanks to my parents, I’m inspired to show you that leadership can make a big difference in people’s lives.

Sharing my knowledge on this blog, I want to be a leader who empowers others to overcome obstacles, achieve their goals, and be themselves while doing it.
